Your Challenge

We are looking for multiple dynamic Application Development Specialists to support NRC’s Digital Technologies Research Centre.

The Application Development Specialist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.


You will design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve software. You will be encouraged to innovate and propose improvements to new and existing solutions and you will be responsible for promoting and adhering to the Agile methodology. You will collaborate with other designers and developers and continuously learn.

 

You will work on such things as:

  • Extending or creating capabilities in globally-deployed software systems.
  • Building modular services for performing tasks as part of systems for cyber security, bioinformatics, IOT, advanced manufacturing, natural language processing, machine learning, AI for good, etc.
  • Ingesting, processing, and interacting with very large data sets.
  • Using test-driven development to write reliable, high-availability, maintainable code
  • Cleverly selecting and integrating open-source tools
  • Implementing and optimizing data stores
  • Rigorously analyzing software and system performance
  • Processing and sharing open data
  • Collaborative system administration

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

University degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field.

Experience

  • Significant (meaning at least three years’) experience in an agile team environment using modern software development tools, techniques, and methodologies.
  • Experience using modern development tools including but not limited to Eclipse, SVN, Git, JUnit, and Hudson; and experience with agile and waterfall development; and experience with unit, functional, and integration testing.
  • Experience with three or more general purpose programming languages, including but not limited to: Java, C/C++, C#, Objective C, and Python; and experience with legacy web technologies, including CGI.
  • Experience with Structured Query Language (SQL) and with at least one major relational database, including but not limited to: MySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle.
  • Experience with one or more general purpose NoSQL document stores, including but not limited to: Lotus Domino, MongoDB, CouchDB.
  • Experience with web tools such as HTML5, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, jQuery UI, and PEG.js.
  • Experience with UNIX servers and workstations, including experience in UNIX command line tools.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of web application development including MVC, templating and web frameworks, HTML 5, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery.
  • Knowledge of service-oriented architectures, distributed systems, web services and related specifications (e.g., REST, HTTP, JSON, authentication).
  • Knowledge of several programming languages such as C++, Python, Java, JavaScript, etc.                                              
  • Knowledge of SQL (MySQL).
  • Knowledge of UNIX command line tools.
  • Basic knowledge of one or more research fields within digital technologies including but not limited to, cybersecurity, game theory, natural language processing, computer vision, HCI, blockchain, machine learning, neural networks, bioinformatics, quantum technologies, medical informatics, etc.
  • Ability to identify problems and conceptualize solutions for implementation in software applications.
  • Ability to deal with practical issues in software design such as scalability and usability of proposed solutions.
  • Ability to communicate research problems and findings verbally and in writing.

Relocation

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Salary Range

 

From : $68,865 to $86,472 per annum. 

 

An incumbent occupying a position within the CS Group is currently entitled to receive a terminable allowance of $176.00 per month.
