National Research Council Canada (NRC)

Great Minds. One Goal. Canada’s Success.

The NRC values diversity in its workforce and encourages candidates to self-identify as members of the following designated groups: women, visible minorities, aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities. Measures for accommodation are available to all candidates retained for further assessment. To retain the best candidate, the NRC may use interchange, secondment, or alternate programs for this hiring.

As Canada’s largest federal research and development (R&D) organization, the NRC plays a leadership role within the Canadian science, technology, and innovation (STI) ecosystem in key areas — advancing scientific and technical knowledge, supporting business innovation, and providing science-based policy solutions for government.

The NRC brings together the brightest minds to deliver tangible impacts on the lives of Canadians and people around the world. It is in this context that the National Research Council Canada (NRC) developed and implemented its Advanced Manufacturing Program in 2018. This program focuses on the concept of smart manufacturing, that is, production methods that use digital technologies to make manufacturing processes more agile, efficient and sustainable. The Government of Canada has committed itself to establishing a new NRC research facility dedicated to advanced manufacturing in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Director Research & Development

As such, the NRC is seeking a research and innovation leader to fulfil the role of Director Research and Development to lead the new Brookside facility and build the team.

Reporting to the Director General (DG), the new Director R&D will lead highly skilled multi-disciplinary research teams with expertise in advanced manufacturing technologies. The Winnipeg team will develop capabilities in two main areas of activity: Advanced Digital Manufacturing (ADM) and Sustainable Food Packaging (SFP). As the head of the Facility, you will build the team; you will lead the research strategy, partnership development, stakeholder engagement, and day-to-day operations.

As a well-qualified candidate for this position, you are known for your research leadership along with your ability to build high performing research teams and collaborate within a multi-stakeholder environment in achieving outcomes. You bring experience in developing, maintaining, and leveraging strategic partnerships, research alliances and client relationships with partners. An outstanding communicator and trusted ally, your innovative approach in leading teams in complex organizations will be valued in taking on this exciting challenge. A postgraduate university degree in a relevant field, and proficiency in both official languages are preferred.

NRC employees are committed to collaboration and dedicated to the betterment of life for Canadian citizens. To apply or to learn more about this exceptional opportunity to lead within the Government of Canada’s largest research organization, please email Michelle Richard at mrichard@boyden.com or Richard Rankin at rrankin@boyden.com and clearly state the role of interest in the subject line of your e-mail.

Note: In the event that no qualified bilingual candidates are identified, NRC may consider unilingual candidates who will be required to commit to achieving these levels within two years.
