Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.

We are looking for an Industrial Technology Advisor (ITA) to support the delivery our Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) specifically for the Northern Ontario Region. The ITA would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

Regarded worldwide as one of the best programs of its kind, IRAP is Canada’s premier innovation assistance program for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

NRC-IRAP helps firms to develop technologies and successfully commercialize them in a global marketplace.  They do this by providing technical and business advisory services and financial assistance to the small and medium- sized enterprises they serve.

We are looking for a seasoned industry professional absolutely enthusiastic about helping innovative Canadian companies grow and prosper.  We need people who see the potential in a business and are driven to nurture it to the next level.  We are focused on results, but we aren’t afraid of risk. We are frank, but with a gentle helping hand. 

Ideally candidates have entrepreneurial or senior level management experience working with SME’s in less densely populated communities.


Preference may be given to candidates who self-identify as women or indigenous peoples.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Screening is conducted based on understanding how you meet both the Education and the Experience criteria discussed in this poster below. As such, candidates must provide a cover letter that clearly articulates how and where they meet each of the criteria.


Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering in a discipline related to the position from a recognized university.

A bachelor's degree in another field with significant work experience relevant to the position will be considered.

Advanced degrees in business, management, administration, finance or marketing would be considered an asset.

  • Recent and extensive industrial business experience as an entrepreneur or senior manager – preferably in SMEs – in any of the following technological domain:
    • Mining
    • Advanced Manufacturing
    • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Recent and extensive private sector experience in developing and commercializing innovative products or services, with demonstrable outcomes.
  • Experience in international business development and/or intellectual property management will be considered an asset.

  • Basic knowledge of NRC-IRAP's mandate, mission and business model.
  • Advanced knowledge of technology, innovation and commercialization issues and trends within the sector/or region relation to the position (Northern Ontario).
  • Solid knowledge of SME business management, marketing of technology and productivity increase.
  • Solid knowledge of developing, adopting and adapting technologies.
  • Solid knowledge of project management.

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Salary Range

This position is classified as a Research Council Officer (RCO), a group that is unique to the NRC. The RCO group uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $56,374 to $159,364 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions. 

  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
