We are looking for a Research Officer (RO) in Aluminium Forming to support our Automotive and Surface Transportation (AST) Research Centre. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.


NRC’s Automotive and Surface Transportation Research Center (NRC-AST) has the mandate to advance product and process technologies for producing more fuel-efficient, affordable, safe, and environmentally-responsible ground vehicles and to deliver engineering solutions to complex technology challenges facing surface transportation industries, including heavy vehicle and rail.


The Research Officer's main responsibility is to support the goals of the NRC and of the Research Center through world-class research, as well as through developing and applying advanced technologies. The Research Officer (RO) works in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. His or her activities also include developing proposals for new research initiatives, project management, and providing service to NRC clients. The RO provides advice on the program's overall research direction and priorities, within the context of the Research Center's operational plan.


This specific RO will, as part of a team, conduct research on aluminum forming processes. He or she will initiate, participate in and manage research activities supported by the industry. The candidate must understand and apply mechanics of deformable bodies concepts for various aluminum forming processes.


The RO's responsibilities will include, among others: developing new research projects on aluminum forming processes, conducting the actual research, collaborating closely with the other members of the team, publishing articles and disseminating the results of the research to the industry and to stakeholders.

Screening Criteria


Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:



Doctorate in  mechanical or metallurgical engineering.


Preference will be given to candidates with a doctorate in mechanical engineering.


A master's degree in engineering in a field related to the position, combined with significant work experience in the field may be considered.

  • Significant experience in solid mechanics more specifically, its application to aluminium forming processes (extrusion, sheet forming, hot forming, rolling, forging, etc.).


  • Significant experience with the mechanical behaviour of metals (plasticity and damage) to predict strain evolution, microstructure, anisotropy, necking, stresses and fracture of parts subjected to different loads.


  • Experience in forming tool design (inserts, dies, cooling and heating systems, tool steels selection, hardening heat treatments, etc.).


  • Experience in tooling instrumentation and sensors to measure force, displacement, strain, temperature, humidity, etc.


  • Experience in programming algorithms for analysis of large data sets (Mega bytes) and for systems optimization and learning to control advanced manufacturing processes.


  • Some experience in business development, marketing and/or developing partnerships and collaborations may be considered an asset.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies


  • Knowledge of characterization equipment for measuring mechanical properties of metals (hydraulic testing system, mechanical extensometer, optical extensometer, digital image correlation, etc.).


  • Knowledge of standard mechanical tests (tension, bending, fatigue, creep, etc.) and custom tests (shear, Nakazima, Marciniak, anisotropy, springback, etc.) at room and high temperatures.


  • Knowledge of CAD software applications such as CATIA, Pro E, SolidWorks, etc. to design experimental rigs used to measure the mechanical behaviour of metals and complex tools and dies used to validate advanced manufacturing processes.


  • Knowledge of programming software (Matlab, Fortran, Python, etc.) for data analysis as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning of advanced forming processes.


  • Significant skill in conducting the full spectrum of research activities, including determining research requirements, proposal writing, project management, data production, analyzing and producing reports using written documentation, presentations and publications.

Salary Range


This position is classified as a Research Council Officer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. The RO group uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $55,541 to $157,009 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.



  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
