We are looking for a Technical Officer to support our Construction Research Centre. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.


The successful candidate will play an important role within the Indoor Air Quality team.  Responsibilities will include the provision of technical support services in the design, planning, conduct and analysis of complex experiments and/or tests, and in the operation of research facilities dealing with indoor air quality and indoor biocontaminants.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


University degree in the field of chemistry, biochemistry, or another other discipline related to the position.

An equivalent combination of work related experience, training and education would also be considered.

  • Significant experience in providing technical support in the field of analytical laboratory equipment such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and/or high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), including operation, data analysis and data interpretation.
  • Significant experience in conducting routine tests, chemical sampling and analysis, performing basic analysis of experimental data and documenting results.
  • Significant experience with the safe operation, routine maintenance/verification/repair and/or installation of modern chemical laboratory equipment (e.g., chromatographic systems, digital balances, etc.).
  • Significant experience with basic chemical laboratory procedures.
  • Experience with mycological analysis (asset).

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies


  • Knowledge of applied practices and basic concepts relating to analytical chemistry (in particular, for GC/MS and/or HPLC).
  • Ability to operate analytical instrumentation, analyze data, discuss technical issues, troubleshoot and solve problems relating to GC/MS and/or HPLC.
  • Knowledge of applied practices and basic concepts for sampling and analyzing indoor air quality samples.
  • Ability to operate air quality sampling equipment related to indoor air quality.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety best practices required to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.

Salary Range

From $72,654 to $93,437 per annum.
