The role

We are looking for a Technical Officer, Wafer Fabrication (MOCVD) to support our Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC). The Technical Officer is someone who shares the NRC core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect, and Creativity.

The position will provide hands‑on process support for semiconductor prototype development and pre‑commercial production in a cleanroom environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in the operation and optimization of Metal‑Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) processes, supporting the epitaxial growth of compound semiconductor materials used in advanced photonic and electronic device fabrication.

While the primary focus will be on MOCVD operations, the incumbent may also support other wafer fabrication activities as required. The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative team of technical specialists, performing process operations, monitoring equipment performance, and maintaining high standards of safety and quality. All work is conducted following established procedures and process instructions in the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and scheduled by the operations and planning teams.

Education

Post-secondary education in Electronic Engineering Technology, or scientific discipline related to the position or an appropriate combination of education and related work experience.

Experience

  • **Significant hands-on experience operating complex manufacturing equipment used for epitaxial growth and semiconductor device fabrication.
  • *Basic experience with semiconductor wafer fabrication processes in a cleanroom environment.
  • **Significant experience in the safe handling and processing of chemicals in a cleanroom laboratory or semiconductor manufacturing environment.
  • **Significant experience in analyzing and interpreting process or metrology data.
  • *Basic experience documenting process steps and results using a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or equivalent production tracking platform.
  • **Significant experience with wet‑chemistry processing, such as III‑V wet‑etching, pre‑cleans, and surface preparation methods used in semiconductor wafer fabrication.
  • *Basic experience supporting other wafer fabrication activities, such as photolithography, etch, thin‑film deposition, and metrology, as required to meet production priorities.

*Basic experience is defined as 6 months to 12 months.
**Significant experience is defined as two (2) to five (5) years.

Condition of employment

  • Reliability Status
    • For a Reliability Status, verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.

  • Must qualify to work in a controlled Goods Zone, training will be provided.
  • Must be able to work in a semiconductor cleanroom environment and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Technical competencies

  • Knowledge of semiconductor materials and epitaxial growth principles as applied to MOCVD processes.
  • Ability to operate and monitor complex fabrication equipment, such as MOCVD reactors, following established process instructions and safety protocols.
  • Ability to perform routine equipment checks, calibrations, and basic maintenance to ensure stable and repeatable process performance.
  • Ability to rigorously follow manufacturing procedures in a technical environment and to support senior staff in executing and documenting related analyses.
  • Ability to use standard software tools (e.g., Word, Excel) and manufacturing databases for data entry and retrieval.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) regulations required to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory and office environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineering and operations staff to support production schedules and process objectives.

Compensation

From $66,126 to $91,012 per annum.
