We are looking for a Technical Officer, HVAC Systems and Indoor Air Quality to support our Construction Research Centre. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The purpose of the position is to provide technical support services to the Indoor Air Quality group.  This will involve facilities operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, preparation of experiments and participating in both laboratory and field experiments. The position will also involve the conduct of routine tests and may include assisting in experimental design and data analysis activities. 


Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


University degree or college diploma in a technical or engineering discipline (mechanical and electrical engineering preferred) 

An equivalent combination of work related experience, training and education would also be considered.

  • Significant experience in operation and maintenance HVAC systems, specifying system’s compnents for heating/cooling, humidification or dehumiditication, and required instrumentation for the measurement of indoor environment parameters (T, RH, Pressure, etc.) and ventilation parmeters (airflow element, orifice palte, damper, etc.).
  • Significant experience providing technical support in specifying, design and fabrication of experimental setup/system, test rig or components for testing and monitoring ventilation systems.
  • Basic experience with methods and techniques related to preparing for, conducting, documenting and analyzing experiments and monitoring.
  • Basic experience with the safe operation, routine maintenance, repair and installation of basic equipment and laboratory apparatus such as air flow elements, indoor environment sensors/data loggers (temperature, relative humidity, pressure, etc.) and indoor air quality monitors (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, VOCs, etc.).
  • Experience in programing in Vee and/or Labview would be an asset.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems relating to facility HVAC system, IAQ laboratory systems and equipment
  • Ability to analyze and discuss issues with colleagues and be creative and perseverant to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of applied practices and basic concepts for measuring indoor environment parameters (temperature, relative humidity, CO2, etc.) and ventilation parameters (airflow, pressure, air velocity, etc.).
  • Knowledge of calibration principles and of handling sensitive laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to operate mechanical or electrical tools and equipment for preparation of experimental setup and test rig. (Drills, power saws, thin snips, wire strippers and cutters, etc.) for ventilation and IAQ.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety best practices required to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.

Salary Range

From $56,730 to $77,692 per annum. 




  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
  • The incumbent should be aware that some travel for field testing/monitoring may be required.
