The Role

We are looking for a Technical Officer, Roofing Systems and Insulation to support our Construction Research Centre. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support in the design, planning, execution, and analysis of laboratory and field experiments related to roofing materials and systems. Key responsibilities include conducting airflow measurements for roof ventilation systems, performing rain simulation testing on green roofs, and designing and maintaining instrumentation and data acquisition systems. The role also involves data analysis and the preparation of laboratory reports and technical documentation.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in one of the following areas: Civil, Environmental Chemical, Mechanical or Building Engineering is required.

An equivalent combination of work-related experience, training, and education may also be considered.

Experience

  • Significant experience working in a laboratory or field-testing environment.
  • Experience in developing test specimens of building envelope materials and systems (eg.roofs) for performance testing under controlled and field conditions.
  • Experience in building envelope airflow testing and measurements.
  • Significant experience working with thermal, airflow, and environmental sensors—including thermocouples, heat flux sensors, flow meters, and weather stations—for evaluating building envelope performance.
  • Experience working with data acquisition tools such as LABVIEW etc.
  • Significant experience in data analysis (Excel, Python, MATLAB, or equivalent).

For a Reliability Status, verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of airflow measurement and analysis.
  • Knowledge of building envelope systems and materials.
  • Ability to prepare, conduct, draft and analyze lab and field experiments in accordance with CSA/ASTM standards.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and data acquisition.
  • Knowledge in data cleaning, statistical analysis, and graphical representation of experimental data using software tools such as Excel, MATLAB etc.
  • Ability to identify technical issues with instrumentation or experimental setups and implement practical solutions.

Compensation

From $66,126 to $91,012 per annum.
