The Role

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.
We are looking for a Shift Engineer / Maintenance (Second Class) to support our Real Property Planning and Management Branch. The incumbent would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

 

Our first class heating plant operates with a small team of Second Class Operating Engineers who are typically designated as either Shift Engineers or Maintenance Engineers.

 

An employee who is designated to perform the Maintenance engineer role will work under the direction of the Assistant Chief Operating Engineer on an eight hour/day Monday to Friday work week. The incumbent is responsible for all maintenance related to the boiler room, compressor plant, gas turbine and steam distribution to the NRC Montreal Road Campus. He/she is also responsible for water treatment of open and closed loops. Maintenance Engineers are called upon to provide shift relief for the Shift Engineers as required, sometimes on a last minute on call basis.

 

When designated to the role of Shift Engineer, an employee operates on a rotational 12-hour shift basis (24 hours/day, 7 days/week) 365 days a year. Shift Engineers are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the NRC Montreal Road Campus Heating/Co-Generation Plant. He/she provides monitoring and emergency maintenance response for all Montreal Road Campus buildings and monitors equipment and systems for other NRC buildings in the National Capital Region during quiet hours.

 

The NRC's main campus offers free parking and easy access to runners, walkers and in-line skaters to break away during the day and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. There are also areas for soccer, volleyball and even beach volleyball during the summer! There are ample picnic areas and easy access to a shopping Centre, grocery store and pharmacy, as well as numerous restaurants.
 

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

  • Secondary School Diploma according to provincial standards.
  • Must have a valid Second Class Operating Engineer Certificate issued by TSSA Candidates who hold a Second Class Power Engineer Certificate in any other province must be able to meet the criteria set by TSSA and pass the exam on the TSSA Act and Ontario Regulation (219/01) within 60 days of receiving of an offer of employment and prior to being appointed to the position.   • Candidates from the province of Quebec with a MMF-C2 (Stationary Enginemen) Certificate and a MMF-CA (Refrigeration) certificate must be able to meet the criteria set by TSSA and pass the exam on the TSSA Act and Ontario Regulation (219/01) within 60 days of receiving of an offer of employment and prior to being appointed to the position. Experience

  • Significant operating experience working in a complex high-pressure steam plant. 
  • Candidates with operating experience in a first class plant may be given priority.
  • Experience performing necessary maintenance and tests, keeping records and responding to power or equipment failures.
  • Basic experience preparing reports for serious problems to be addressed by maintenance as part of its corrective/preventive maintenance programs.
  • Experience operating gas turbine co-generation would be an asset.

Must be available to work on rotating 12 hour shifts as the heating plant operates 24/7.

 

Must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position which include but may not be limited to: crouching, bending, twisting, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, ability to hear to diagnose mechanical troubles, and the ability to handle heavy and bulky objects.

Technical Competencies

  • Ability to operate high-pressure steam plant and auxiliary equipment, such as pumps, motors, fans, compressors and chillers.
  • Solid knowledge of operating and maintenance procedures related to the operation of a high-pressure steam and cogeneration (gas turbine) plant and its distribution systems;
  • Solid knowledge of boiler water treatment and cooling tower water treatment applicable to the occupation; 
  • Solid knowledge of safety practices such a WHIMIS, confined space entry and use of personal protective equipment.

Compensation

Salary under review

 

From $81,498 to $85,589 per annum.
