The Role

We are looking for a Metallization and Backend Engineer to support our Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC) Research Centre. The incumbent would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.  
 
The CPFC offers our clients and partners access to cutting-edge photonics fabrication services that provide simulation, design, fabrication, testing, characterization, and prototyping services to help move innovative photonic and electronic devices to market. It plays a key role in NRC’s Advanced Photonic Components and Gallium Nitride Electronics Programs.


The primary responsibility of the Metallization and Backend Engineer will be to develop, sustain and optimize a variety of III-V processes to fabricate a wide range of devices on InP, GaAs, Si, or other substrates to meet customer requirements. The role includes collaborating on process integration and evaluation, diagnosing and troubleshooting, analyzing process performance and documentation; ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in the Physical, Chemical, Materials Sciences or Chemical or Electrical Engineering.


A PhD in one of these disciplines will be considered an asset.

Experience

  • Extensive* hands-on experience in R&D or semiconductor production environment;
  • Extensive* and recent** experience in semiconductor metallization systems and techniques, process development and optimization;
  • Significant*** experience in process integration for III-V semiconductor photonic devices;
  • Significant*** experience in Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DoE) and MES System;
  • Experience in thinning, lapping, and polishing processes with an in-depth understanding of jigs, pads, conditioning disks and slurries.


*Extensive experience is defined as experience of at least six (6) years.
**Recent experience is defined as experience within the last five (5) years.
***Significant experience is defined as experience of at least two (2) years.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  1. Knowledge of metal evaporation and backend and their characterization techniques related to their processes;
  2. Knowledge of safe practices for working with chemicals, compressed gases, liquid nitrogen, and electrical, mechanical, and vacuum systems;
  3. Knowledge of the use of the design of experiments, process control checks, trend charts, WIP tracking and paperless MES;
  4. Proficient ability to identify and diagnose issues within complex processes or fabrication tools, while comprehensively understanding the interdependent nature of process steps across multiple fabrication areas to determine effective solutions;
  5. Ability to plan, schedule, and carry out all steps needed to prototype microfabricated semiconductor devices;
  6. Proficient ability to safely handle extremely toxic materials during device fabrication are essential.

Compensation

The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the RCO-2 level with a salary range of $82,338 to $114,354


Note: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level.  As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
