Your Challenge

We are looking for 2 Mechanical Technologists to support the Central Facilities and the Engine Performance and Icing teams in the Gas Turbine Laboratory (GTL) within the Aerospace Research Centre.

 

The work will be conducted at the Montreal Rd Campus facilities. Your role will be to carry out facility operations, maintenance support and upgrade activities.  The Mechanical Technologists would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

 

You will be expected to independently operate large compressors, exhausters, heaters, pumps and other industrial scale and specialized equipment to provide stable and reliable operational conditions through the delivery of compressed air in support of NRC clients and researchers. You will also be expected to safely and effectively perform troubleshooting, proactive and corrective maintenance to the aforementioned major equipment and auxiliary equipment. You will also be required to independently or with a team perform facility improving activities that will include mechanical fabrication services.

 

Secondary duties might include working in the combustion (for Central Facilities team) and engine (for Engine Performance and Icing team) or altitude test cells when required.

 

Some shift work is required and from time to time, the work can also include early-morning or late-evening shifts to accommodate flexible testing timeframes.

Education

A 3-year college diploma in Mechanical Technology.

 

Equivalency

A relevant combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Experience
  • Significant experience with the safe operation and maintenance of facilities and equipment in a gas turbine test facility, laboratory or industrial environment; and
  • Significant experience with safe operation of hand and power tools and/or material handling equipment.

 

Assets:

  • Experience working at heights and the use of the related equipment;
  • Experience with machine shop tools and wood shop tools;
  • Experience working with and supervising outside contractors to perform the work needed and;
  • Experience in coordinating maintenance.

 

Additionnally, for the Central Facilities team:

  • Significant experience with the safe operation, maintenance and safety aspects of machines such as large compressors, pumps, valves, air piping systems, pressure vessels, etc. and;
  • Significant experience with manual and electronic data logging.

 

Assets:

  • Experience working with large compressors and associated equipment;
  • Experience with electric/pneumatic valves and electronics;
  • Experience with fork lift;
  • Experience with overhead cranes; and
  • Experience with methods and techniques related to preparing for, conducting, documenting and analyzing experiments/tests.

 

Additionnally, for the Engine Performance and Icing team:

  • Basic expercience with CAD.

 

Assets:

  • Refrigeration operator B certificate; and
  • Experience assembling industrial equipment.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies
  • Ability to logically analyze and discuss technical issues, troubleshoot and solve problems relating to gas turbine test and/or industrial facilities;
  • Ability to assemble and disassemble mechanical installations;
  • Basic knowledge of fundamentals of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics;
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, and process and instrumentation diagrams;
  • Knowledge of basic safety considerations relevant to a gas turbine test cell and/or industrial facilities; and
  • Ability to write draft protocols and standard operating procedures.

Salary Range

From $53,987 to $73,935 per annum.
