We are looking for a Mechanical Technician, Combustion and Fuels to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The person would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

 

As a Mechanical Technician, Combustion and Fuels, you will provide technical support for research and technology development projects within the Combustion and Fuels (CAF) Group of the Gas Turbines Laboratory (GTL).

 

You will be responsible for working closely with a multidisciplinary team composed of Technical Officers, Research Council Officers and Research Officers within the CAF Group at NRC.  Under the supervision of more senior Technical Officers, you will support specific gas turbine combustion and fuels-related projects in CAF’s high pressure combustion test cells and in its research laboratories (such as the Mixing Research Laboratory, Spray Dynamics Laboratory and High Pressure Spray Laboratory), when tasked.

 

In addition, you will assist in the delivery of complete test systems including design, fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of high pressure air, fuel and water delivery systems.  At times, you will be responsible for the purchasing of goods and to track their delivery.  You will also be tasked assisting with implementation of test activities, including test rig or apparatus set-up, test hardware repairs, modifications and instrumentations.  Finally, you will also be tasked with monitoring and operating of test system controls via a computer-based user interface and you will be tasked with test facility maintenance duties based on the planned maintenance schedule.

Education

College diploma (3-year) in a Mechanical Engineering Technology program or related field.

Experience

•Basic experience of gas turbines and gas turbine combustors;
•Experience with installing, operating and trouble-shooting combustion and/or spray test rigs, or equivalents in a laboratory or test cell environment;
•Experience in using 3D CAD design software (Solidworks preferred);
•Basic experience with installation of instrumentation such as thermocouples and pressure tubing related to gas turbine combustors;
•Basic experience in the operation or installation of data acquisition systems; and
•Basic experience in hands-on machining or other fabrication operations.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of gas turbine engines;
  • Basic knowledge of fundamentals of fluid mechanics;
  • Basic knowledge of the principles for common measurement techniques in fluid mechanics;
  • Basic knowledge of liquid and gaseous fuels storage, handling, processing (such as mixing, sampling and sparging) and disposal;
  • Practical knowledge of 3D CAD design software (Solidworks preferred);
  • Ability to use hand and power tools to aid fabrication and assembly of high pressure piping systems, laboratory or test cell equipment maintenance as well as repair and modification of testing hardware;
  • Basic knowledge of safety standards required in a laboratory or test cell environment; and
  • Knowledge of ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 piping installations, and pressure vessel installations would be considered as an asset.

Relocation

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Salary Range

From $45,537 to $64,072 per annum. 

Notes

  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
  • A flexible schedule and overtime may be required.
  • Heavy lifting on occasional basis.
  • The working conditions are those found in an industrial laboratory or engine component test cell environment with the presence of hazardous materials and situations, including elevated sound levels, high temperature and high pressure process fluid piping, lasers, combustible liquid fuels and gases, as well poisonous or toxic gases. The incumbent is expected to independently work in such environments in a safe manner, with a working-level tolerance to a typical test environment with enhanced noise levels, heat and reduced air quality.
