We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to support our Administrative Services and Property Management (ASPM) Branch. The Mechanical Engineer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.


Working closely with a multidisciplinary project delivery and engineering team, the Mechanical Engineer is a vital member of ASPM’s engineering and construction team. He/she is responsible for providing mechanical design solutions, drawings, specifications and support for both new construction and renovation projects assigned to the engineering and construction team. In addition, the Mechanical Engineer shall provide support to the operations and maintenance team as required.


The projects range from renovations, restorations and alterations of NRC buildings and facilities to new construction and involve all construction trades and disciplines including civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical. The project values can range from tens of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars depending on the complexity and size of the project being completed.

Due to the fast-paced working environment, the Mechanical Engineer needs to have strong communication skills and must be comfortable working with contractors, consultants, clients, and other NRC employees.

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


Successful completion of a Bachelor degree in an accredited* Mechanical Engineering program.


*An accredited engineering program consists of studies in engineering leading to a bachelor’s degree (or higher level) that fulfills the academic requirements for licensure with Canada’s engineering regulators per the rules and practices set forth and administered by Engineers Canada (


Membership in a provincial professional engineering association, Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) / Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) in Quebec, etc. will be considered an asset.

  • Recent* experience in the design of mechanical systems relating to institutional, commercial or industrial facilities including: heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, fire protection systems, etc.
  • Recent* experience in the preparation of tender/construction drawings (with the AutoCad software), specifications and associated construction cost estimates.
  • Recent* experience interacting with other discipline designers and engineers as well as clients, contractors and other participants working in institutional, commercial or industrial facilities construction or renovation projects.


* Recent is defined as: within the last two (2) years.

Technical Competencies
  • Basic knowledge of design practices, selection of proper material and equipment, and regulatory requirements concerning mechanical systems in institutional, commercial or industrial buildings and facilities.
  • Basic knowledge of general documentation, tendering and contract award practices for construction projects.
  • Basic abilities in using AutoCad software to produce mechanical drawings for purpose of tendering and construction.

Salary Range

This position is classified as a Research Council Officer (RCO), a group that is unique to the NRC. The RCO group uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $55,541 to $157,009 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions. 


In addition, the incumbent who meets the language requirements will  receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.

  • An eligibility list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
