The role

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Technologist to support our Design and Fabrication Services Branch. The Mechanical Design Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

 

Design and Fabrication Services (DFS) is the National Research Council’s (NRC) principal design and fabrication organization, supporting research and innovation. DFS supports NRC research by continuously delivering improvements to key national test facilities as well as directly through engineering, design and fabrication support to individual research portfolios, programs and projects.

 

The position is responsible for producing designs and detailed drawings for the fabrication of experimental apparatus, mechanical instrumentation and high quality mechanical prototypes. The emphasis is on creating designs and drawings that accurately capture the design specifications and can be readily interpreted by fabrication staff. The incumbent undertakes and/or provides support to projects with intermediate level design requirements.

Screening criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Diploma from an institute of technology (2400 Hr. Program) in mechanical engineering technology.
 

An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Experience

  • Recent experience* creating intermediate-level conceptual designs for prototypes within a project management focused, multidisciplinary research environment;
  • Significant experience** with 3D modelling and detailed fabrication drawings according to drafting procedures and practices required in a machining, sheet metal and fabrication environment, including geometric dimensioning and tolerance;
  • Recent experience* with common and advanced manufacturing processes, such as standard machining, sheet metal, welding and rapid prototyping techniques.

**Significant is defined as at least 3 years of experience.

Condition of employment

Secret clearance


A thorough security clearance process will be applied. 

 

For a Secret Clearance, verification of background information over a period of 10 years is required. Individuals must have lived in Canada for a sufficient period of time to enable the security screening process.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical competencies

  • Ability to complete 3D CAD modelling and detailed fabrication drawings for a manufacturing environment that includes but is not limited to CNC machining and lathe work, welding, and sheet metal work;
  • Knowledge of classical engineering analysis methods;
  • Intermediate knowledge of the physical characteristics and selection/application of commonly used engineering materials and composites;
  • Ability to organize and manage small projects from conceptual design through to manufacturing and installation using basic project management techniques.

Compensation

From $66,126 to $91,012 per annum.
