We are looking for an Equipment technician to support our Advanced Electronics & Photonics Research Centre (AEP). The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The Epitaxy team performs the growth of III-V compound semiconductors for optical and electronic devices, and is part of the materials development ecosystem within NRC’s Advanced Electronics & Photonics research Centre. Our epitaxy growth facility includes GaAs/GaSb MBE, InP CBE and GaN MBE growth systems.

We are looking for an equipment technician to support the epitaxy facility and infrastructure within the team. The primary duty of the position is to provide technical support to the GaAs/GaSb MBE laboratory. In addition, the technical officer will also provide technical support to other growth and characterization laboratories of the Epitaxy team.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


Post-secondary education in a technical, engineering or scientific discipline related to the position.

A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

  • Significant experience* with the safe operation, maintenance/verification/repair and/or installation of semiconductor process equipment, mechanical or electrical machinery, hand and power tools and/or material handling equipment.
  • Significant experience* with troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining process equipment, mechanical, electrical and high vacuum pump systems.
  • Basic experience in the operation and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum pumps, vacuum chambers, and pumping systems.
  • Experience with GaAs growth or processing facility, or experience with dealing with hazardous semiconductor materials or waste would be valued asset.

Significant experience* is defined as a minimum of 2 years experience.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Solid knowledge of safe practices for working with chemicals, compressed gases, liquid nitrogen, and electrical, mechanical, and vacuum systems.
  • Solid knowledge of best practice for Preventive Maintenance of process equipment.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety regulations required to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment within the laboratory environment and its affiliated office space.
  • Knowledge of UHV process equipment operation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance.
  • Solid knowledge of instrumentation and electronics diagnosis/repair would be an asset.

Salary Range

From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.


  • The incumbent is expected to independently work in a laboratory environment in a safe manner.
  • Lifting may be required.
  • Overtime will sometimes be required on short notice.
  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
