Work Arrangements: 

  • Due to the nature of the work and operational requirements, this position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement (combination of working onsite and telework). Employees in this position who telework will be required to travel to the identified work site at least four times per week or a minimum of 80% of their regular work schedule at their own expense.

The Role

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's premiere research and technology organization.

We are looking for an experienced, vibrant and dynamic Director General for the Communications Branch. The Director General would be someone who shares our core values of impact, accountability, leadership, integrity and collaboration.

In alignment with NRC's overall vision and mission, the Director General of the Communications Branch is accountable for providing a whole-of-government communications perspective as well as leadership and oversight of the Communications Branch. The incumbent safeguards the organization's reputation and ensures alignment with Government of Canada communications priorities as well as supports clients by developing and delivering professional communications products and related services (e.g. brand management, consultations and stakeholder engagement, public opinion research, design and production, media monitoring, print services).

Education

Graduation from a recognized university with acceptable specialization in communications, public affairs, marketing or any other discipline related to the position.

Experience

  • Recent and significant experience in providing strategic direction to staff and in managing comprehensive communications programs, services and products in a government context.
  • Recent and significant experience at the Executive level in providing strategic advice and counsel to senior level executives including Presidents, Vice Presidents and/or other equivalent positions in the public or private sectors, on complex and sensitive communications issues.
  • Experience in working with a diversity of clients and partners, and engaging in or managing stakeholder relations.
  • Experience in managing human and financial resources within a relevant communications environment and in a manner to reflect modern, changing communication practices.

  • Knowledge of the machinery of federal government communications needs and processes with a special emphasis on the workings of Ministers’ and Deputy Ministers’ Offices, and central agencies.
  • Knowledge of government policies, legislation and regulation; current and emerging trends; and best practices related to the Communications Branch mandate.
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing leading edge communications practices, technologies.
  • Knowledge/awareness of the research context in Canada and of the NRC.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in providing leadership for the planning and delivery of client-oriented services.
  • Ability to lead people and negotiate consensus through significant organizational change while keeping both employees and partners engaged.
  • Ability to develop, present and implement a strategic approach/business plans.
  • Ability to manage effectively in a complex and continuously changing business and technology environment.

Compensation

From $165,683 to $198,699 per annum.
