The role
We are looking for a Data Science Engineer to support our Digital Technologies research Centre (DT). The Data Science Engineer would be an employee who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
Under the direction of the Team Leader, Data Analytics Centre, the incumbent will contribute to the provision of data analytics services to external clients and NRC.
The Data Science Engineer will work alongside our data scientists to support the development of custom machine learning models and other data products for clients. They have an understanding of data science workflows as well as technical expertise pertaining to solution architectures and data engineering that will support project development and delivery to clients. The roles and responsibilities of the incumbent Data Science Engineer may include:
- Collaborate with data scientists, AI researchers, and client stakeholders to define technical strategies and implementation plans to address client business challenges.
- Develop scalable, secure, and maintainable solution architectures that enable clients to adopt, test, and operationalize AI and data-driven technologies.
- Build and maintain data ingestion, transformation, storage, and access layers to support machine learning, analytics, visualization, and decision-support applications.
- Package AI and data science prototypes into usable client-facing solutions, including web applications, dashboards, APIs, containers, documentation, and deployment-ready components.
- Lead the development of key technical components within multidisciplinary projects, ensuring alignment with project objectives, client requirements, security expectations, and operational constraints.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to data pipelines, application components, integrations, infrastructure, and deployment environments.
- Evaluate emerging tools, frameworks, and architectural patterns in data engineering, AI enablement, and data science platforms, and advise project teams on their practical use.
- Communicate technical concepts, architecture decisions, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Produce technical documentation, architecture diagrams, deployment guides, data pipeline documentation, and user-oriented materials to support knowledge transfer to clients.
- Help define reusable patterns, templates, tools, and platform components that improve the team’s ability to deliver AI and data science solutions efficiently.

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
- A Master’s degree from a recognized university in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or closely related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or closely related STEM field with related work experience may be considered.

Experience
- Significant experience designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines, including data ingestion, transformation, validation, storage, and/or access layers.
- Significant experience developing backend systems, APIs, or services that support data-intensive applications, analytics platforms, or AI-enabled solutions.
- Significant experience building client-facing solutions, such as web applications, dashboards, APIs, containers or analytical tools.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team involving data scientists and supporting their work
Assets:
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
- Experience working directly with government, public sector, industrial, or enterprise clients

Compensation
From $103,911 to $130,061 per annum.
