We are looking for a vibrant and dynamic Applications System Administrator to support our Construction Research Centre and maintain Codes Canada’s support systems including its Content Management System (CMS). With the development of new programs and initiatives at Codes Canada and in the Construction Research Centre, there is an opportunity to grow and develop this position as the systems and needs evolve and expand. The Applications System Administrator would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The incumbent must demonstrate that they have significant recent experience in Unix and systems administration. They will be responsible for administration, planning, testing, installation, configuration and maintenance of existing TeamSite CMS and supporting services; and CMS content stores for Codes Canada. The incumbent will co-operate with SSC/NRC KITS on planning, development, testing, installation, configuration or upgrading servers, operating systems, packages as related to system tools and user productivity tools for Codes Canada.
 

This position provides technical advice, training and assistance to internal clients and is a subject matter resource on technical aspects of Codes Canada applications, operating systems including its CMS, systems development and security standards. The incumbent provides project management of systems related projects and represents the project team in discussions with internal clients and technical staff to explain issues of a technical nature or to resolve technical issues.
 

Responsibilities also include producing specifications and technical documentation for installation and configuration, and maintenance procedures; and evaluating new technologies/applications and providing recommendations to staff.
 

NRC’s main campus on Montreal Road offers free parking and easy access for runners, walkers and in-line skaters to break away during the day and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Most buildings have shower and locker facilities, in addition to an on-campus Fitness Centre. There are also areas for soccer, volleyball and even beach volleyball during the summer! Screening Criteria


Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education


Degree or diploma in Computer Science or systems administration.

Candidates who have acquired computer skills and knowledge through academic training in another university program or at a community college or professional certification program and who have relevant experience in Unix OS and Content Management Systems (CMS) administration in Unix OS environment may also be considered.

A Systems Administration certification in Unix and Systems Administration certification for TeamSite would be an asset.

Experience


Significant and recent experience on Unix (Linux/Solaris) servers including:

  •  Troubleshooting technical problems
  •  Applications installation, administration and maintenance
  •  Middleware installation, configuration and maintenance


Experience working in a project management focused environment


The following will be considered assets:

  • Experience using XML processing and publishing tools on Unix (Linux/Solaris)
  • OpenText TeamSite installation and administration experience on Unix (Linux/Solaris)
  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of programming language modules (Perl and Python)
  • Experience in Solaris 10 administration

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

 

  • Knowledge of methods and practices of computer science, applications system administration, application development, departmental IT systems methodologies, the Systems Development Life-Cycle (SDLC) and applications management systems.
     
  • Knowledge of Unix (Linux/Solaris) command line tools; middleware and applications installation; backup, recovery, continuity and survivability methods, techniques and practices.
     
  • Knowledge of policy and program objectives within departmental and partner organizations to provide relevant technical services and advice to clients, and to resolve various systems issues.
     
  • Ability to analyze application technical and procedural problems including system malfunctions and implement appropriate sustainable solutions.
     
  • Ability to identify evolving client requirements and concerns, and to design, develop and maintain appropriate training resources for CMS and applications users.
     
  • Ability to communicate in writing to provide specifications and documentation, back-up and recovery procedures and to develop technical reports including recommendations to management.
     
  • Knowledge of project management principles.
     
  • Knowledge of Solaris 10 Administration would be an asset.

Relocation


Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Salary Range


From $68,865 to 86,472 per annum.
 

An incumbent occupying a position within the CS Group is currently entitled to receive a terminable allowance of $176 per month.
