We are looking for Technical Officers, Manufacturing, large scale purification to support our Biologics Manufacturing Centre. Positions at different levels will be filled.The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The new Biologics Manufacturing Centre (BMC), currently under construction by the NRC, will help to accelerate Canada’s capacity to produce, access and supply vaccines and other biologics. Certified as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliant, the facility will have full end-to-end production capability for mammalian cell-based biologics. This includes a production capacity of approximately 4000 litres per month, upstream and downstream processing, a fill and finish system, a quality control lab, secondary packaging, and related logistics management of final products.  In the short-term, the BMC’s top priority and focus is to help secure the production of a COVID-19 vaccine for Canadians as quickly as possible, once one is approved by Health Canada. In the longer term, the BMC’s focus will be on providing innovative solutions for the domestic production and supply of novel biologics for the future, while providing Canada with access to a facility that is ready to respond to emergencies, such as a pandemic.


Under the leadership of the Team Leader, Downstream, the Technical Officers will be responsible for conducting all processes related to protein or virus purification including continuous centrifugation, column chromatography using AKTA systems, tangential flow filtration, nanofiltration, dead-end filtration and filter integrity testing. The Technical Officers will also be responsible for setting up, qualifying and monitoring unit processes, data analysis, batch recording, area cleaning and maintenance. Shift work will be required.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.

A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

  • Experience working in GMP manufacturing operations, specifically downstream processing (e.g. column chromatography, AKTA systems, tangential flow filtration, nanofiltration, etc.), within a biotechnology or biopharmaceutical industry environment.
  • Experience with single use technology is an asset.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of large scale downstream purification techniques
  • Knowledge of GMP requirements as applied to pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical products.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret results, identify problems and troubleshoot issues in a lab environment.
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and to write work instructions.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety regulations.

Note : The position level (TO-2, TO-3 or TO-4) will be determined after the assessment of the candidates.

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Salary Range

TO-2: From $48,569 to $68,339 per annum.
TO-3: From $57,581 to $78,857 per annum.
TO-4: From $72,654 to $93,437 per annum.


In addition, if the position requirement is bilingual imperative, the incumbent will receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.
