We are looking for a vibrant and dynamic Research Officer (RO) to support NRC’s Aquatic and Crop Resource Development Research Centre.  The RO would be someone who shares our core values of impact, accountability, leadership, integrity and collaboration.


This specific position will support the goals of NRC and the ACRD Research Centre through innovative research projects in the field of microbial engineering and fermentation, with emphasis on the development of atypical and traditional fermentation processes suitable for the valorization of bioresources. These projects have strong potential for industrial applications and involve working directly with Canadian industry to enhance productivity and competitiveness.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


PhD in Industrial Microbiology, Metabolic Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, Genetics or a related discipline.

  • Significant experience in molecular microbiology and metabolic engineering of a variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms (bacteria, yeast and fungi), including strain development, optimization and implementation.
  • Experience in the design, development and scale up/scale down of microbial fermentation processes for industrial and commercial applications, including the production of fermentation products (e.g. small molecules and chemicals)
  • Experience with bioreactor operations and downstream recovery equipment at bench and pilot scale, including capacity development and providing troubleshooting support for fermentation process
  • Experience developing and managing commercially-relevant projects in a multi-disciplinary R&D environment, including building and leading research teams
  • Experience in the full spectrum of research activities including identification of research requirements, proposal writing, project management, data production and analysis, and reporting through written documentation, presentations and publishing.
  • Experience in managing and coordinating projects and R&D activities with internal and external stakeholders

Technical Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of research principles and techniques in microbial strain development, including metabolic modeling and engineering
  • Advanced knowledge of microbial metabolism and physiology
  • Advanced knowledge of microbial fermentation processes at lab and pilot scale using atypical and typical microbes or feedstocks, including process development, optimization and scale up/scale down.
  • Knowledge of bioreactor operations and down-stream processing technologies that support fermentation processes
  • Knowledge of industry drivers and needs in bioresources sectors and markets.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property and its protection.

Salary Range

From $52,854 to $149,416 per annum. 


  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
