We are looking for a Research Associate in Systems Engineering and Control in Unmanned Aircraft Systems to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.


As a Research Associate, you will support the goals of NRC and the Aerospace Research Centre through research of international calibre and the development and application of advanced technologies in the area of system level integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). You will work in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. Activities also include the development of proposals for new research initiatives and support program management, while working closely with NRC clients and collaborators.  You will also provide input into the overall direction and research priorities for the program area within the context of the Research Centre business plan.

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

As part of the RA Program you must have received your PhD or Master's Degree in Aerospace or Systems Engineering within the last five years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six months.

Experience
  • Experience in development and integration of mechatronic systems, with an emphasis on unmanned aircraft systems;
  • Experience in dynamics and control of unmanned aircraft systems, including experience in technology development using Pixhawk controllers;
  • Experience in the full spectrum of above research areas including identification of research requirements, proposal writing, project management, data production and analysis, ensuring data quality and reporting through written documentation, presentations and publishing high-caliber peer-reviewed research papers;
  • Experience with programming and scripting languages such as Matlab, C/C++ and Python;
  • Basic experience in modelling and simulation of complex mechatronic systems; and
  • Some experience in the development of partnerships and collaborations.
Condition of Employment

Secret (II).  A Secret clearance must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies
  • Advanced knowledge of mechatronic architectures in unmanned aircraft systems and systems engineering approaches used for their design;
  • Solid knowledge of unmanned aircraft systems dynamics and control;
  • Advanced knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as Matlab, C/C++ and Python;
  • Advanced knowledge of tools for the simulation of complex systems such as Simulink and Modelica;
  • Basic knowledge of algorithm-driven design tools, like mathematical optimization and machine learning; and
  • Knowledge of ROS would be considered an asset.

Relocation

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Salary Range

From $55,541 to $157,009 per annum.  In addition, the incumbent will receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.

 

The Research Associate (RA) Program is unique to the NRC. It falls under the RO/RCO classification system which uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience.
