Your Challenge

This challenge will enable you to be part of a team which will break new frontiers in cyber security while engaging in the protection of Canadian’s most critical infrastructures across the nation, and beyond. We are looking for agile, talented, rigorous and efficient colleagues who are not afraid of the dark and wants to shed lights on today and tomorrow’s security challenges! 


The primary responsibility of the researcher in this position is to support the goals of NRC and the activities of the Digital Technologies Research Centre in conducting research of international calibre in Cyber Security.


Research will be focused in one or many of the following areas:

  • Data Security and Privacy
  • IOT and Operational Technologies Security
  • Security and Privacy of AI and Machine learning
  • Anti-Tampering and Deterrence Mechanisms
  • Cyber Resilience, Cyber Intelligence
  • Quantum Resistance
  • Secure Identity and Trust
  • Cyber Forensics
  • Intrusion Detection


All those will be positioned in diverse contexts for the benefit of diverse sectors.


The researcher will work in a team environment with other researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. The researcher will be called on to participate in international evaluations or demonstrations of the team’s applied technologies.


We are looking for vibrant and dynamic Research Officers to support NRC’s Digital Technologies Research Centre (NRC-DT). The Research Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:


PhD Computer Sciences, Engineering or similar discipline.


An active professional security certification like OSCP, CISSP, SANS, ISACA, or others, is considered an asset.

  • Experience creating a significant publication record in top conferences and journals.
  • Experience in creating systems applied to cyber security.
  • Experience in a team working on the development of large-scale systems.
  • Experience creating novel algorithms or new capabilities in cyber security or machine learning applied to cyber security.
  • Experience in participating in international competitions or shared tasks in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, cyber-security, life sciences or engineering is an asset.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of the different working layers of cyber security, from physical to application level.
  • Ability to publish high-quality research papers in cyber-security.
  • Knowledge of modern statistics, data analytics and machine learning techniques and frameworks.
  • Ability to iteratively improve system performance through systematic empirical evaluation.
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix, programming and scripting languages such as C/C++, JavaScript, Python, Shell, Assembly,
  • Knowledge of security tools such as Shodan, Metasploit, Kali-Linux, Wireshark, Maltego, SET.
  • Knowledge of techniques for running advanced algorithms in a “big data” and high performance computing environment, including knowledge of the use of GPUs.

Salary Range


This position is classified as a Research fficer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. The RO group uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $49,670 to $140,418 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.
