We are looking for a Research Associate (RA) to support our Nanobiology research group at the Nanotechnology Research Centre in Edmonton. The RA would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

 

The primary responsibility of the RA is to support the goals of NRC and the Research Centre through research of international calibre and the development and application of advanced technologies. The RA works in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. Activities also include the development of proposals for new research initiatives, project management, and providing service to NRC clients.  The RA provides input into the overall direction and research priorities for the program area within the context of the Research Centre business plan.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

As part of the RA Program you must have received your PhD degree in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, bioengineering or immunology within the last five years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six months.

Experience

  • Experience in culturing and working with mammalian cells.
  • Experience in creating biomaterials and or using biomaterials for the purposes of manipulating biological systems.
  • Significant experience in general molecular biology techniques including, but not limited to transcriptome mapping, molecular subcloning, quantitative PCR, or site directed mutagenesis.
  • Experience with nanoparticle design and characterization, either through biological testing or biochemical methods.
  • Experience in the full spectrum of research activities including experimental design, data production, analysis and quality assurance as reported through written documentation, publications and/or presentations.
  • Experience with proteomics, including ligand/receptor analysis would be considered an asset
  • Experience in allergic inflammation and skin immunology would be considered an asset.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  •  Knowledge of mammalian biology, including immune responses and the mechanisms of inflammation.
  • Knowledge of basic nanoparticle design and uses of nanomaterials in DNA delivery and cell differentiation.
  • Knowledge of basic synthetic biology approaches and applications.
  • Knowledge of basic cell and tissue culture techniques and applications in skin biology and inflammation studies.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to write scientific reports, either as scientific publications or similar.
  • Strong presentation skills and significant experience presenting scientific findings to research audiences at national or international conferences.

Relocation

Salary Range

From $52,854 to $149,416 per annum. 

 

The Research Associate (RA) Program is unique to the NRC. It falls under the RO/RCO classification system which uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience.
