Your Challenge


Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) while collaborating with University of Toronto to  help realize exciting  projects in the area of bio-devices design, fabrication and their applications in in-vitro-diagnostics, regenerative medicine and bio-manufacturing.


The Technical Officer – Electrical and Electronics Design position is reporting to the NRC Bioanalytical Micro-Nano Devices Section composed of 38 physicists, nanofabrication engineers, chemists and biomedical researchers. This position will be dedicated to support innovation of a multidisciplinary team in the domain of fabrication of nanomaterials and molecular-based micro and nano devices. The impact of your contributions would be in progressing science & technology as well as practical applications in the field of life sciences research and clinical application. More specifically, key activity includes the design, assembly, validation and debugging of biodiagnostics instrumentation for lab-on-chip systems, the development of cable and harnesses, the design of electronics and electrical schematics and PCBs, the assembly, test and validation as well as the documentation and execution of test procedures. You will participate in the design of unique high-tech microfluidics instruments and the programming of embedded systems.


The selected candidate might be called to contribute to clinical applications such as in-vitro diagnostics for remote areas, for space applications, or in the emerging field of cellular immunotherapy.


The Technical Officer – Electrical and Electronics Design will provide technical support to research work for developing microfluidic control and automation methods. The individuals selected will also have to recognize and resolve problems associated with the experimental or analytical techniques and the approaches used.  The candidate is expected to be able to work independently as well as part of the broader R&D team an environment requiring a high-level of adaptability and multitasking.


The work will be performed in collaboration with researchers, technical officers, industrial partners, or other government laboratories.


The position includes maintaining laboratory equipment, space, logbooks and inventories, as well as responsibilities involving health and safety.

Screening Criteria


Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:



Bachelor’s degree in physics engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent training

  • Extensive and recent experience in designing electronics circuit boards with a professional EDA software.


  • Extensive and recent experience in desiging cables and harnesses.


  • Extensive and recent experience in documentation and version control.


  • Recent experience in instrumentation and control.


  • Recent experience in programming for FPGA and/or microcontrollers.

Technical Competencies


  • Solid knowledge of high-density PCB design.


  • Solid and practical knowledge of data acquisition and signal processing for digital and analog signals.


  • Knowledge of communication protocols used in instrumentation.


  • Knowledge of FPGA and/or microcontroller programming.


  • Ability to design cable and harness diagrams.


  • Ability to design power supplies would be an asset.


  • Ability to design with 3D CAD software such as AutoCAD, Inventor or SolidWorks would be an asset.

Salary Range


From $56,730 to $77,692 per annum. 



  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
