Your Challenge

We are looking to hire a technology specialist to support the Polymer Bioproducts team at the Automotive and Surface Transportation Research Centre (AST). The successful candidate must share our core values of integrity, excellence, respect and creativity.


  • You will be part of a diverse and dynamic team and will work with us to take on exciting challenges that will change the industrial materials of tomorrow.
  • You will be responsible for conducting materials characterization tests, with an emphasis on polymers and their composites. You will prepare equipment and materials for testing. You will also review and document protocols and, if necessary, identify problems and propose suitable solutions. You will complete the work as per project managers’ specifications and deliver results on schedule.
  • You will collect and record data generated during tests, and determine whether the results are valid and whether further testing or changes to the experimental method are necessary. You will compile data, interpret results, make recommendations and prepare test reports.
  • If necessary, you will develop new testing procedures or validate new analytical methods.
  • You will help prepare proposals for clients by supporting project managers in estimating testing costs and timelines.
  • You will be responsible for the maintenance and safety of equipment and work areas. You will ensure that the equipment for which you are responsible is well maintained, calibrated, functional and safe. You will resolve problems related to equipment malfunctions. You will provide calibration reports and operating procedures. You will maintain records of equipment use.
  • You will follow and promote awareness of NRC and AST health and safety procedures, processes and guidelines. You will help identify and document potential health and safety hazards and suggest improvements.
  • As required, you will provide training and guidance on the use of equipment under your responsibility to other technical officers or students.
  • You will purchase materials, components and small equipment. You will identify potential suppliers, obtain quotes and place orders.
  • You will keep abreast of technological changes in your field so that you can make recommendations on purchasing new equipment. You may be required to write specifications and manage capital procurement processes in accordance with Government of Canada rules.


You will work in a multidisciplinary environment in close collaboration with NRC researchers and technical officers, as well as industrial partners.

Screening Criteria


Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:



University degree in materials science or a related field.


A college degree in materials science or a related field with significant work experience in materials characterization may be considered.

  • Significant experience in designing, conducting, documenting and analyzing complex materials characterization tests (with an emphasis on polymers and their composites) in an industrial, public or academic research laboratory.
  • Significant experience in the safe use, maintenance, testing, repair and installation of laboratory equipment.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies


  • Sound theoretical and practical knowledge of thermal characterization of polymers and their composites.
  • Sound theoretical and knowledge of rheological characterization of polymers and their composites.
  • Sound theoretical and practical knowledge of structural characterization of polymers and their composites using optical and electron microscopy.
  • Basic theoretical and practical knowledge of other material characterization techniques (physical characterization, mechanical characterization, spectroscopy).
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety in a research laboratory or plant.
  • Knowledge of polymer shaping (extrusion processes, injection moulding, compression moulding, thermoforming) is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical troubleshooting is considered an asset.

Salary Range


From $72,654 to $93,437 per annum. 



  • A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
  • Part of daily activities requires certain physical strength and may include lifting, moving and carrying heavy loads, climbing, stretching, crouching, working in a noisy environment and being exposed to odours.
  • Some travel may be required.
